Local 673 abandons locked out workers

"You voted the companies proposal down for the third time, your on your own" said Javier to the ATMI before they were locked out.
Union trucks are still delivering panels for ATMI while the workers have no support from Local 673 who failed to negotiate a first contract for the workers. Last year the workers took a 20% pay cut and Javier could only negotiate a 5% over 5 years deal. No wonder they turned down that deal.
Way to go retards, abandon working Families when they need protection the most.

Where is the representation for Local 673? Why are they letting Union trucks haul the panels made by replacement workers while the ones who voted to join the Union are locked out?

“The workers were able to overcome the company’s persistent anti-union push through a combination of efforts by the local union and the organizing department of Teamsters Joint Council 25,” said Roger ######, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 673.

All we can expect is more lies like this one. These "reformers" were on the side of the company from the start.

ATMI Precast, located at 960 Ridgeway Ave., makes precast concrete products, then ships them out for construction in new buildings and structures. The lockout occurred after contract negotiations from March 2010 reached an impasse, but the workers claim they just want what’s fair for them.

The march will begin at 11:45 AM at Plaza Mexico, 700 E. New York Avenue, Aurora.
The march has been organized by the workers themselves with support from the Chicago Workers Collaborative, Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice, and Moveon.org.

As of yesterday Local 673 informed the company that they no longer represent to locked out workers at ATMI. The workers were told to report back to work or loose their jobs. Please join the march today and show support for a fair wage for these workers.

“They are asking him to respect the humanity of his workers, and to bring the workers back to their jobs at a fair wage before Christmas,” said Mary Shesgreen, who along with other members of Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice, came to support the ATMI workers. “We’re here today to say that the way that the workers have been treated stinks... It’s not eloquent, but it’s true.”
About three dozen laborers, their families and supporters marched from the parking lot of Plaza Mexico, 700 E. New York St., through downtown, then to ATMI Precast at 960 Ridgeway Ave. Joining in the march were members of the Chicago Worker’s Collaborative, Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice, MoveOn.org, and Occupy Aurora.
“What we’re looking for is fair treatment at work,” said Fernando Yanez, an ATMI Precast employee. “We’re humiliated every day and we’re not going to take it anymore,”

What an embarrassment to know the reform slate would not stand up for a living wage for these workers.
Thanks for nothing reform.

The lockout came after employees requested the right to union representation and the restoration of a 20 percent pay cut imposed more than two years ago. A final offer from ATMI included a 5 percent increase, but workers said that some employees have been with ATMI for 20 years and only make near minimum wage.
Last month, Paul Carr, ATMI chief operating officer, said contract negotiations had been ongoing since March 2010. Carr said the company made significant compromises, but the employees voted down ATMI’s final offer, which included the wage increase.
Company officials could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
ATMI employees recently voted to join Teamsters Local 673, which represented the employees through negotiations this fall, but had not yet signed a contract.
“They have the right to negotiate as a group with the owner for better working conditions,” said Tim Bell, who came from Rolling Meadows on Thursday to support ATMI workers. “The employees feel like they’re not respected. They feel like the atmosphere is hostile and full of intimidation.
“What this all comes down to is that they just want to be respected.”

Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice will return to the streets at 3 p.m. at ATMI Precast, 960 Ridgeway Ave., Aurora, Monday, Dec 12, to hold a public demonstration in support of the ATMI Precast workers recently fired by the company. Your supported is needed and welcome!
These worker have been fired since the company ended its deplorable holiday-season lockout. Workers plan to file charges of retaliation for concerted activity, as well as for discrimination on the basis of their national origin.

The Dec. 1 rally protested ATMI’s decision Nov. 28 to fire any employee who refused to return from a lockout imposed while workers were attempting to unionize with Teamsters Local 673, said Mary Shesgreen, spokesman for Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice, a Geneva-based nonprofit labor rights group. Employees were seeking to restore a 20 percent pay cut imposed by ATMI two years ago, she added.
Shesgreen said the company “needs to intimidate them and keep them on the edge of poverty to keep them in line. It’s morally disgusting.”
ATMI chief operating officer Paul Carr countered in a press release issued Monday that the company ended the lockout because Teamsters Local 673 officials announced they would not represent ATMI workers.

Fernando Yanez was working as a carpenter and laborer at ATMI since 1998, but was fired on Dec. 6 after presenting a petition signed by 72 Hispanic employees collected at the Dec. 1 rally in front of the ATMI building.
Yanez filed an unfair labor practices complaint with the state and NLRB earlier this week, as well as a suit with the state Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC.) They state that he and several other ATMI employees asked to review their personnel files earlier this month so that they could prove discrimination in promotions and pay raises. This is when they were terminated.
