Vernon Fiddler scored the go-ahead goal on a fortunate bounce with 8 minutes 26 seconds remaining on Saturday night to send the Stars to a 3-1 victory over the Devils in Dallas.

With the score tied, 1-1, Fiddler sent a shot toward the net from the left of the goal that banked off the skate of Devils defenseman Mark Fayne and past goalie Johan Hedberg for Fiddler’s second goal of the season.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 31 shots and Loui Eriksson and Sheldon Souray also scored for the Stars, who had won their first four at home before a 5-3 loss to Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Petr Sykora scored for the Devils, who closed a 1-3 trip.

Hedberg, the Stars’ backup in the 2005-6 season, made 21 saves in his sixth straight start while Martin Brodeur is on injured reserve with a bruised right shoulder.

The Devils pulled Hedberg for an extra skater and had a six-on-four edge with 1:02 left after Dallas’s Michael Ryder went to the penalty box for interference. However, the Devils were unable to put pressure on Lehtonen, and Souray scored into an empty net with 2.7 seconds left.

SHARKS 3, ISLANDERS 2 Brent Burns scored a power-play goal 1:07 into overtime, handing the host Islanders their fifth straight loss. Burns put a one-timer from the top of the right circle past Rick DiPietro after a disputed delay-of-game penalty on Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic.

Hamonic attempted to fire the puck off the glass to a streaking John Tavares, but it went out of play. The officials convened and concluded that the puck had not touched the glass, leading to a delay-of-game call. Replays, however, showed that the puck did hit the glass first.

Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks, and Thomas Greiss made 35 saves. San Jose has won the first five games of a six-game trip, which concludes Monday night against the Rangers.

Tavares and Michael Grabner scored for the Islanders.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, PENGUINS 3 Phil Kessel scored his league-leading 10th goal midway through the third period for host Toronto against Pittsburgh, which had won five straight but was playing for the 13th time in 24 days.

Kessel and Pittsburgh’s James Neal entered the night tied for the league lead in goals. Kessel edged ahead shortly after the Penguins erased their third one-goal deficit of the game. He scored the winner at 10:08 of the third as the puck barely touched his stick before he fired a shot past Pittsburgh goalie Brent Johnson.

FLYERS 5, HURRICANES 1 Jaromir Jagr scored two goals for host Philadelphia. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 24 of 25 shots by Carolina, ending his 0-4-1 stretch.

CANADIENS 4, BRUINS 2 Brian Gionta and David Desharnais scored power-play goals and Carey Price made 26 saves as host Montreal won its third straight. The Canadiens won by 2-1 in Boston on Thursday.

LIGHTNING 1, JETS 0 Dwayne Roloson made 28 saves in his 29th career shutout and Vincent Lecavalier scored a power-play goal late in the second period for host Tampa Bay.

PREDATORS 3, DUCKS 0 Pekka Rinne made 20 saves for host Nashville in his 100th career win and his 22nd shutout, a franchise record. Patric Hornqvist, Martin Erat and Shea Weber scored in the first meeting between the two teams since Nashville beat Anaheim in the opening round of the playoffs last season.

WILD 1, RED WINGS 0 Josh Harding made 36 saves and Dany Heatley scored in the first period for host Minnesota. Jimmy Howard made 19 saves for Detroit, which has lost four straight games after a 5-0 start.

BLACKHAWKS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2 Viktor Stalberg of host Chicago scored his first two goals of the season in 1:58 early in the third period, breaking a 2-2 tie. Columbus (1-9-1) has the league’s worst record and is off to the poorest start in franchise history.

PANTHERS 3, SABRES 2 Jason Garrison broke a 2-2 tie with 1:43 left, sending Florida past host Buffalo for its third win in four games.

PRONGER’S VISION BLURRY Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger, who was hit just outside his right eye with the blade of a stick on Monday, has blurred vision in the eye and said he did not know when he would return. He said the blurriness was because of eyedrops and other medications needed to relieve swelling.

Pronger said he felt lucky that his injury was not worse. “Usually, when your head goes numb, it’s a sign something’s wrong,” he said.
