IBT Secretary-Treasurer Tom Keegel Dumps Hoffa!

July 14, 2010: General Secretary Treasurer Tom Keegel announces he will not run for re-election next year, according to reports from members of the General Executive Board and officials close to Keegel.

Keegel, the number two officer in the IBT, had previously agreed to run with James Hoffa as the Hoffa-Keegel Slate in the 2011 election. But Keegel also has had disagreements with Hoffa, and at times seemed close to breaking away from him.

The Hoffa administration is reporting that Keegel, who is 68 years old, is retiring for family reasons. There's is valid speculation that is not the case. Whether Keegel at some point in the future speaks out regarding his tenure and the upcoming election is an open question.

It's also believed that he will not endorse Hoffa.

The Hoffa camp is circulating petitions to accredit the candidacies of both Hoffa and Keegel at this time. Nominations for General President, General Secretary-Treasurer and all Vice President positions will be held at the IBT Convention in late June 2011, and the mail ballot election of all 1.3 million Teamsters will be in November 2011. Joint Council 42s Principal Officer Randy Cammack--who is also Vice-President at Large for the IBT and Secretary-Treasurer at Local 63 has endorsed Hoffa.

Keegel was first elected in 1998, after Hoffa’s first running mate, Billy Hogan, withdrew from the slate with corruption charges swirling around him. Keegel was reelected with Hoffa in 2001 and 2006. Now he has opted to step down.

Fred Gegare is at present the only other declared candidate for General President. He is also circulating accreditation petitions, along with three running mates for vice president positions.

Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU), the reform movement which previously backed the campaigns of reformers Tom Leedham and Ron Carey, has not yet put forward or endorsed a candidate.

I've been a member of Local 120 for nearly 30 years and am proud that Tom Keegel was my preisdent and our union's General Secrtary-Treasurer. I don't believe any of the bullshit that TDU puts out. Tom Keegel is a family man and if he says that he's not running so he can be with his family then God Bless him and his family for all that they have sacrificed for this great Union.

He will always be my friend and my brother and shame on anyone who tries to play politics with this great man's legacy.

If Keegel wants to retire to be with his family at age 68, then I see no problem with that at all. I have respect for him as well and many other's throughout and it is moreover a personal choice than a political choice and keep in mind TDU will say anything to put a spin on things in whatever direction they want to go, or have Teamsters believe to their benefit.

When Martino passed on, he was 2 weeks shy of his 6lst b-day, and although he planned on putting in another 5-8+ years, he had purchased a motor home and thought about in later years how he would like to drive throughout the US (as he use to when a truck driver on vacation time) and do the motor home travel most of the time when he retired, but he never got the opportunity to do so. He would fix up that motor home every weekend, saying to me, another 8yrs and he can then travel, and retire,(even though he could of retired earlier) but that time for him never came.

Keegel will be missed by many but he paid his dues, put in his time and he has every right to spend his later years with his family. We should not be making a political issue out of it, or political spin on his life choices.

I don't think calling Teamster members stupid idiots is really the answer do you? It's your approach, but you should choose your word choices better. As many members get on t-net as a source of current information and not daily, yet a few minutes out of the week or two only. We reply to what we read on threads and sometimes we reply premature before more information comes out. That does not make a teamster member a stupid idiot. I'm not offended, I'm just saying, not the best word choice. I've made bad word choices too I regret, we all do at times, but I would never call a whole forum of teamster members stupid idiots. Not a way to get votes out.

If Keegel retires and/or runs,(whichever slate) I have respect for him. I also like Gegare, I need to make that clear. Both of these men are long time Teamsters. Personally, I don't know Hoffa Jr. well enough to base an political opinion.

I gotta tell ya, you aren't winning any friends over by insulting the T-Net crowd. Most folks here are pretty knowledgeable and have been around for a while. I can only speak for myself and say that I am neither a "chickenshit" NOR a "stupid idiot". In fact, I would bet that the vast majority of Teamsters would shit a golden brick if they ran into me in a dark alley. And my education would surely stand up against any but the most advanced Teamsters I know. And just by virtue of the fact that Gegare has operatives like you working for his campaign, it will send members running into the voting booth to cast a ballot for Hoffa. I used to think you were Fred...but hell even fucking Gegare isn't this stupid. Now I'm guessing you are the same fucking moron that had your email listed in your profile. All the name calling is cute but these are the facts. Hoffa no longer has the support of the membership. Hoffa no longer has the support of Mr. Keegel. Hoffa no longer has the support of IBT Vice President at large Fred Gegare. Hoffa no longer has the support of Central Region Vice President Brad Slawson Sr. Hoffa no longer has the support of retired IBT Central Region Vice President Walt Lytle. Hoffa no longer has the support of International Trustee Henry Perry. Hoffa no longer has the support of a majority of his staff. and the list keeps growing and growing. And there are good reasons why he has lost this support which would take hours to explain but what the hell .... here are a couple. The International Union is broke. Now if you don't beleive me call one of these guys on the Executive Board and they will explain it to you. Hoffa and Hall have screwed over our members at UPS. If you don't beleive me call one of these guys on the Executive Board and they will explain it to you. Hoffa and Johnson has screwed over our freight members and if you don't believe that .... well you get the picture. We have sometime before elections, and anything can happen before that time arrives, re: slates and who's on them, and/or who remains and who drops out, retires,etc. Meaning, so much can change, from now to then. Example: Hoffa or Gegare could have medical problems, what have you, we just don't know what the upcoming future will hold before election time. Not saying that any of them have health problems no. It was only an example off top of my head only. With that said, our focus should be on our International Union and who the best running slates will be for our International Union for the betterment of our organization.

There is NO WAY that any of us, want to see TDU in action. So without taking a slate side between Gegare or Hoffa slate, I will however EQUAL the playing field, so that we NEVER have TDU! In the end it will be the members choice between Hoffa/Gegare and whomever else, but anyone that considers TDU, then why even be a teamster?-as that will be the demise of our organization.

To the Gegare slate/supporters: Your immediate/up coming focus needs to be on Teamsters Canada,(as it stands now)Hoffa has Canada all the way around the board. So Hoffa focus won't be there as much. To the Hoffa slate/supporters: your focus should be in US. To:TDU might as well give up, as no way TDU will ever get Canadian votes! So as it stands now, Hoffa focus will be in the US, including Gegare focus/slate would have to win over half of Canada,so that is what your up against-as it stands now. Of course all that can change as time goes on.

And anyone on the two (2) slates that knows me well, you know I tell the truth as it comes along. So don't do the opposite of what I mentioned. Unlike here (US) where Teamsters are divided, in which way to go, Hoffa/Gegare/slate and some for TDU??-- Canada members tend to follow their representation in what their representation feels is best way to go.

I'm not tipping off TDU as TDU does not have a chance in hell. Sure they can put together a slate, sure they can try, but in the end they will only lose. So those Teamsters in the US, why even bother with voting TDU?!! Real Teamsters (not TDU) should Focus on the two slates and make a solid decision not based on friendships, yet think long and hard on whom should be in office as the IBT General President, for the betterment of our organization.

I also said nitwit Hoffa and his minions are destroying the union. The union is broke after the largest dues increase in 2002. The IBT continues to layoff essential staff, cut services, ignore funding requirements for TAPP and the Family plan which in itself will bankrupt the IBT, fucked the retirees by eliminating the retirees chapter which provided services to the retirees and plans on cutting more staff and services. I think I'm right on those things so if you want to check call 202-624-6800 and ask.

Hoffa has done the same thing so they are even. Hoffa ran against Carey because Carey divided the union. Do you hate all Teamster leaders or is there someone you support for General President? Or are you like Paula Macchello and Mary Kay Henry who anonymously smear our union and all our leaders on this website by saying ANYBODY BUT HOFFA.
