As I was walking into work today a Union Steward asked me to sign a petition for the Steve Pocztowski slate... he convinced me and so I did. It asked for a printed name, signature and the last four digits of my social security number. Do all petitions ask for the last four of the soc? Or was I scammed, it's been running through my head all day. Thanks.

Every local union attendance record has to include the above mentioned information. All union petitions would require the same. This is to show that you indeed signed and provided the official information required to have the petition declared legal and accepted by the union. If you are unsure as to the validity of the petition ask your steward to check it out, or call your local union office.

I had to put my social security number on the petition I signed last week. Almost made me late for work but worth it to help out the union.
There is nothing in Local 631's bylaws or the International Constitution that requires you to put your Social Security number or any part of it on any petition.

It is a big deal when the US government came up with a Social Security number and card for all working Americans it was never to be used for idetafcation and that is what you are saying is ok. My SS card says that on it. The IBT does not require your SS number to be on file at all. If you ask they will issue you a random number to be used to identify you in their system. You should never give information to personal anybody. Recently at a Union meeting in my Local union they were asking for extra information at the sign in table such as e-mail addresses. For what purpose. It turns out to use in their upcoming campaign for office. Illegal activity using the Union hall for campaigning purposes. You see why now.
