Obituary

Alex (Alejandro) Ybarrolaza was born in China on November 12, 1936, died suddenly and peacefully on Thursday February 18th, 2010.

In September 1956, Alex with his familly immigrated to San Francisco. He went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad and later its subsidiary Pacific Motor Trucking. In 1960, while at PMT, Alex joined Teamsters Local #70 and became a local truck driver. Also in the later part of 1960 Alex joined the Marine Corps, became a reservist and was honorably discharged in November 1965.

Alex married Judy Soares in 1967 and helped raise her two sons Tony and Michael. In 1969 they were blessed with the arrival of their son Phillip. After 15 yrs of marriage they divorced and Judy has since passed away.

In 1969 Alex ran for Union office at Teamsters Local 70 in Oakland and was elected Business Agent. He went on to win more elections holding different positions within the Teamsters until he retired in 1993 as a Special Assistant to the General President. After his retirement Alex started a labor consulting business that he maintained until his passing.

Alex dedicated his life to the Labor Movement and his true love was helping the underpriviledged and abused workers. (Anyone in need of a champion to fight all manners of injustices). In his later years Alex shifted his focus and representation to farm workers, principally in the Watsonville and Salinas Valley. He was working on that very project the day before his death.

He was an avid sportman having hunted in most of the western United States and a member of Ducks Unlimited. Alex became a part-time commercial fisherman and an active board member of the SBCSFA, a commercial fishing association. He spent numerous hours drafting letters of support for the struggling industry.

Alex is survived by his son Phillip, his wife Rosemary and grandson John Alex who is to be born this April. Stepsons Tony and Michael and their respective families. Brothers Julian and his wife Heather, Gabriel and his wife Pamela, Sister Margarita and her husband Edgar. Nephews Douglas, Gabriel Jr., Julian Michael, Paul, Nathan, Mark and Wayne. Nieces Lorna and Katherine and their respective families.

Alex will be best remembered for his kindness, selfless dedication, intellect and respect for all mankind. He will be greatly missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Thanks to everyone for their support.

-Phil

Attended the funeral today. Chuck Mack gave the eulogy. Great job and captured Alex perfectly. I am sure that Phil and Gabe really appreciated it. Great Job Chuck!
