Got a call from my steward yesterday----the news is DHL is going to pay 11 weeks severance (40 hr per wk, health and welfare, pension) This is for all laid off drivers with 6 plus years. Not sure of any more details, was told we'd know more on Friday. Any one else hear about this?

Severance package:
First of all, the severance package works off of your "trip date". The trip date is when you were considered to be a "employee". Follow along... My trip date was late Feb 2007. That means that late Feb 2008 was 1 full year for me and entitled me to 2 weeks severance. Anything beyond that, and SHORT of a full year DOES NOT COUNT (according to DHL corporate).
In mid-December, I met with the local Teamster treasurer. He got my dates and figured it had been approximately 1.75 years since my "trip". He said he'd put in for 4 weeks severance, but that it might be argued down to 2 weeks. I accepted that it may happen. Beyond that, he asked how many weeks of vacation I'd been given in the previous year. It was 2 weeks (paid). He then added on 2 weeks of paid vacation severance for a total of 6, possibly 4 weeks of paid severance total.

On 12/31/2008 I received a direct deposit of "week 1" of severance (40 hours). On 1/8/2009 I received "week 2" of severance. THAT WAS IT!!!!
On 1/15/2009 I did not get an email from my bank re: a direct deposit. I called DHL payroll in Florida (866-776-5432) and made inquiries. They informed me that they were still working off of the information being given by the local terminals and that I should refer to the human resources dept of my terminal.

Please note that "week 1" of severance showed NO extras, but "week 2" issued 1/8/2009 now showed 80 hours of available vacation time!!!!!!!!

I contacted my terminal. The human resources person told me she'd noticed that my name had "disappeared" from the system in the past few days, but would email payroll to get an answer. She returned my call that same day around 2:30pm and told me that payroll had informed her I was only getting 2 weeks severance and NO vacation severance pay! She explained that, per DHL policy, one MUST work 25 days in the new calender year to qualify for vacation, or, in this case, the severance for it!

I immediately called someone high up in the chain at CT Dept of Labor. She looked up my info and said that DHL had entered into "their" system that I would be getting 4 weeks! And that it did NOT include ANY vacation time acrued thus far. She also explained that "vacation severance" was not disqualifying income. Which means that you CAN collect unemployment while getting the vacation severance. Good to know right?
Anyway, bottom line is that DHL told CT DOL I'd be getting 4 weeks of income from them (minimum) and paid ony 2!!!

NO matter how you look at it, they screwed me of 2 weeks income! AND, they misreported it to a state/federal agency!

The repurcusions of this could be profound. My contact at CT DOL asked me to fill out a "wage complaint form" and mail it to her. In the meantime, she passed my case onto a special division.

More info will be passed on as I get it.

I hope this helps you. Watch your back. Do not trust DHL, as I beleive they have violated the nature of the agreement with the union.

can you pm me with who you had looking into things with the CT DOL, would like to talk to them about what the union did with the pension, seems the FED's do not want to make any waves with the union.
