Clinton Proposes Renewing China's Most-Favored Trade Status

Congressional reaction mixed amidst larger China policy issues
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 3) -- President Bill Clinton on Wednesday proposed renewing most-favored-nation (MFN) trade status for China, saying it was "clearly in our nation's interest" as he urged Congress to support the request.

Posted Image Most-favored-nation status offers low tariffs and treats countries as normal trading partners.

"Trade is also an important part of our relationship with China. Our exports have tripled over the last decade and now support over 170,000 American jobs," Clinton argued.

"This status does not convey any special privilege," Clinton said. "It is simply ordinary, natural fair treatment offered to virtually every nation on Earth."

It might have been helpful if we had not have borrowed soo much money from China that we've done away with our ability to put any kind of pressure on China to live up to their end of the bargin..as I recall Bush even siad as much..."our trade partners have not acted in good faith"..sorry don't have a dircet link for the quote...but, I knew exactly what Bush was talking about....Now this is one time I'll give Bush credit..he made no effort to lie or blame anyone...

Hey, maybe we should calculate it terms of lost revenue the amount of money it has cost us by Chian not doing their part...and use it to knock down the amount of our loan!!
