Pensions were invented in the early 1900's. Many of the folks back then were uneducated and some couldn't read or write.
Most certainly weren't sophisticated enough to manage their own retirement. So pensions and Social Security were created so the average dumb slob Joe Six Pack could retire without going into poverty.
Its 2005 now. Most people are financially savvy enough to manage their own money today, including their retirement. Just give me a 401k match and couple of index funds. I can beat Central States returns year after year. I think most of us can. I dont need APWA managing my money either. If i get fired , the 401k match goes with me. If i die, I can give the 401k match to my wife or kids. Stupid pension can't do that. I pitty the fool who needs the Union or government to manage their money for them.
FUCK THE PENSION, APWA OR CENTRAL STATES

probably would be the best solution, but noone wants to pick up the tab for those already retired or about to retired... 401k only works out for new employee's. bottom drops out for everyone else.

TakeYourLunchFool, actually most Teamster pension programs do have a 'survivor' benefit program that pay the member's dependent survivors a pre retirement pension benefit upon the death of the member especially when there are dependent children survivors. Many also have the spouse benefit post retirement. Central States PF also provides for retiree health care benefits.

They don't privide anything!
You pay threw your nose for your post retirement health care in CS, and as far as the servivor benifit, that cost you $400.00 of your retirement check per month, in order for your spouse to get half of your retirement, should you die.

sawman...
She's YOUR wife not MINE, it is not up to me or CS to provide for her future if she stayed home and raised the kids depending on YOU to provide for her security beyond the grave.
If she worked for a lousy employer that pays women less, or does not have a decent retirement plan then why should the Union pick up the slack for her employer?
Let's face it, if your wife is totally dependent on YO, she is working for YOU not me, not UPS or any other Union employer!
For years my wife didn't work out side our home, it was a good set up at the time, (for me) then I lost my job......as a nurse she found a job quicker than me....resentful......you are dammned right, this "Mr. Mom" stuff makes for good movies.....and that is as far as it goes.
Your job is not a dual empolyment propisition, your employer does not cut your pay check in half, and give half to you and half to your wife....
