Management Following Drivers In Pov's

Ok, I don't know for sure if this is allowed. My husband has been driving since May. He told me that one of the managers (or on car sups) was following him in his POV while he was doing his routes. What kind of place is this. That is just crazy to me. I have the union hand book and let me tell you I don't see anything about managers beening allowed to follow drivers to do a eval. I thought that was what the ride along was for.

Now onto the 2nd part. I do see in the "book" it states that no driver will be scheduled for more than 1 day's ride per year. My husband has already done his 30 days of hell as they put it. Well he got a call from his manager tonight saying that the district manager is riding with him tomorrow. What is that all about. Why would the district manager be riding with a driver. Don't they sit behind a desk.

I have a hard time trusting UPS at this point. Yes it is a good company to work for. But they do some things that just don't add up to me. Now has anyone else ever had anything like this happen. This just doesn't sit well in my gut.

Thanks for your help.

Pay Raises And New Contract

Ok here is my questions. My husband has been with UPS almost 9 years. He started out as a pre load, then he went to part time pre load supervisor and now he is a full time package driver. He started driving May 9, 2008 and got his Seniority July 3 2008. The new contract for the pay raises went into effect Aug 1, 2008.

We have been told that he was being paid under the new contract since he started so close to in coming into effect. Then we were told no he is being paid under the old one. Then we get told if they are paying him under the old one he is getting overpaid. Payroll told us that he is getting paid the right amount, and this was before Aug 1, 08.

He was getting paid $16.77 an hour. He didn't get a pay raise when he reached his seniorty date. Now that the new contract has started he got a $0.30 pay raise. What is the progression rate for? I don't know if we are to get that also. I also noticed that new drivers coming in after Aug 1, 2008 will be making more money than my husband. Why is that?

I am just trying to cover my tracks. While my husband was a part time pre load supervisor he was called to active duty for 2 years. UPS knew what day he was coming back. They tried to say that he was not intitled to his pay raises. We had to fight UPS for weeks to get what was due to my husband. I had to go as far as calling JAG to get paperwork to show UPS that they had to treat my husband like he has been there the whole time. With all that trouble I have became really good friends with the manager over the hub.

Ups Nears Agreement With Drivers, Handlers

July 31, 2008

BY FRANCINE KNOWLES Staff Reporter

United Parcel Service reached a tentative agreement with Chicago-based Teamsters Local 705 on a new contract covering roughly 11,000 drivers, package handlers and other part-time and full-time workers just hours ahead of a strike deadline, the parties said Thursday.

Workers' hourly pay currently ranges between roughly $8.50 and $28. That would rise $4 over the life of the five-year contract, Local 705 Secretary-Treasurer Steve Pocztowski said. The deal also includes improved pension benefits, an extra week of vacation plus an extra day off, he said.

The proposal will be voted on by workers within the next five weeks, Pocztowski said.

The union had vowed to strike at 12:01 Friday morning if an agreement was not reached.

Full story here http://www.suntimes.com/business/1084486,ups073108.article

Poor Communication And No Unity

I get a different story every day from my stews. Nobody i talk to seems to want to strike and many are saying they will cross. The only ones who seem to want to strike are the idiots wearing the 8-1 we done shirts. Security guard tells us management is making plans to ride out a strike. How long will this last? I just got my 22.3 job. Somebody give me a good answer that makes sense man!

Ups Drivers Could Strike

Big Chicago Teamsters Local Ready To Strike UPS If Necessary - 07/22/08

Workers Independent News

By Doug Cunningham

Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago – second largest in the nation - has authorized a strike against UPS with a deadline of midnight July 31st. Job security and working conditions are among the issues. Joe Balkis is a Teamsters Local 705 worker.

[Balkis]: “The companies keep on getting’ richer and the working classes keep on getting’ poorer. Enough is enough! It’s time we draw a line in the sand. We can’t take it anymore. The starting pay alone has only been increased once since I’ve been workin’ here for twenty years. We deserve better. Payin’ people $8.50 - $9.50 an hour to start is immoral.”

Juan Campos is Recording Secretary for Local 705.

[Campos]: “This is a company that’s made – since 1997 ‘til today over twenty billion dollars profit. This is not a company that’s crying for money or needs money or needs flexibility or needs concessions. This is a company that needs to get back to the membership.”

Campos says Local 705 doesn’t want to strike but his guts tells him the union may have to.

[Campos]: “I am very hopeful. I’m looking forward to settle this. But my gut tells me their arrogance won’t allow them to address the issues that we need to be addressed.”

The issue of UPS encouraging customers to drop ground in Air Letterboxes was discussed at some point earlier this year. Air drivers servicing these letterboxes are paid either part time or full time air driver rates, not the higher package car rate.
This blatant contract violation has been successfully grieved in Local 251 and the New England Area Parcel Grievance Committee.
Have there been other instances where Locals and/or members have grieved this issue?

On june 9th the union and ups meet exchanging proposals. The union gave a full contract proposal while ups has piece mealed there counter proposals, while never even addressing the economics side of the contract. Since then both sides have meet another 3 times all last week with little being resolved. If ups is serious in gettting a deal done by july 31st they need to take this process a little more serious than they have.

The union since late last year has been gathering info and concerns from the members holding ups contract meetings with all of the employees and have spent alot of time gathering and addressing these issues. You know what ups has to say "NOT INTERESTED".

The local has also posted our proposal and every counter proposal online at WWW.TEAMSTERSLOCAL705.ORG Never in my years have i seen any administration keep the members upto date on contract talks.
