The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Teamsters Express Division have committed to doing all that is possible to serve the best interests of our members who work for DHL. This follows the May 28 announcement that DHL would be restructuring by 'acquiring the services' of UPS, with the intent to provide transportation in its air network system for package volume in the U.S.

We are currently meeting with DHL to get clarification on what the restructuring means, how it will work on the ground and the potential effect it could have on our members.

We are involved politically in Ohio concerning any effect the restructuring has on ABX, DHL, and ASTAR, as we have members at all three companies. Local 1224 is a member of the official Economic Task Force for the DHL Hub in Wilmington, along with key community, labor and political leaders from Ohio city councils to Congress. The task force is working to present DHL with solutions that would enable the company to maintain the gateway in Wilmington, while addressing cost concerns. If this is not possible, the task force will assist in searching for new carriers to inhabit the DHL Air Park. The task force will be holding public meetings and keeping the community informed as plans progress.

Local 1224, representing the pilots at ABX Air; Local 100, representing the dispatchers at ASTAR; and Local 413, representing the auto-sort maintenance workers, have all been in contact with the employers to make sure that their members get the best deal possible IF their jobs are affected by the restructuring. The International Union and the Teamsters Express Division are assisting wherever possible in these negotiations and meetings. Any severance package offered by the affected companies to Teamster members MUST BE BARGAINED WITH THE TEAMSTERS UNION.

Could you tell me something?
I am uncertain how long those people have been Teamsters.
Haven't they just recently joined, within a year or so ago?
Not that it matters (how long ago) but they also voted on, and probably for, this dumb contract too.

These bargaining groups have contracts with ABX Air, not DHL Express. Although I sympathize with their struggle, why should they receive a severance package from DHL Express? In my opinion, DHL should create a fund of one lump sum for breaking the lease contract with ABX Air and then donate the ILN air facility to the people of Wilmington as a gift. The Teamsters could then bargain with ABX Air on how to disperse the payments from this fund to the workers. The people could then build a casino at the vacated air park if they can't find another customer to replace DHL.
