GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 12) - The Green Bay Packers' general manager and coach don't plan to grant Brett Favre's request for his release. If he does rejoin the team, they told The Associated Press, it won't be as the starting quarterback.

And Favre is unlikely to accept a backup role, GM Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged Saturday in their first public comments since the 38-year-old Favre demanded his release this week.

A trade may be the best resolution, but Thompson and McCarthy declined to discuss that possibility. Thompson said he had not received any inquiries from other teams as of Saturday morning.

"We've communicated that to Brett, that we have since moved forward," Thompson said. "At the same time, we've never said that there couldn't be some role that he might play here. But I would understand his point that he would want to play."

I dont blame the Packers .Why should they giveup there right to his service without nothing in return. Also dont believe that BS that if he did return to the Pack that he wouldnt be the starting QB.

Instructions on how to add a youtube video to your TN post.

Just a thought Id say theres a chance that a nfl team that has a chance at a SuperBowl run has let Brett know that they would be interested in him next season.

If I was not such a big Rex Grossman fan, I would be saying "What the f are the Bears thinking?" What better way to f with Green Bay then to pick up a "washed up" Favre and then go to the Super Bowl riding on the back of our old arch enemy. (prior to last year)

Favre is an Iron man that still has a few good years left in him ! They should let him go, and play their young talent, and let him sign with a team with a Q.B problem !
The problem is that Green Bay knows that a couple of their NFC rivals are interested in signing him ! Give him some talented receivers on another team, and watch the old man work his magic !!! icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif icon_eek.gif

Favre informed the team in late March, at the NFL owners meeting, that he wanted to return, according to Fox Sports. The Packers welcomed the change of heart, and even chartered a jet to fly to Mississippi to pick him up so they could make an official announcement. But, according to the report, Favre flip-flopped again, opting to stay retired.

In April, the Packers handed Aaron Rodgers the keys to the offense and rounded out the depth at the position by selecting Brian Brohm in the second round, as well as LSU's Matt Flynn in the seventh. Since then, the Packers have conducted mini-camps and organized team activities.

Now, with training camp about two weeks away, Favre is putting the Packers in an impossible position, one a team source called a "headache."

If they grant him his unconditional release, the Packers get nothing in return for a Hall of Fame player coming off a Pro Bowl season and risk having him land inside the NFC North.

Check mate, Favre should have made up his mind a long time ago and stuck with it.
